Getting a job in Australia is pretty similar to most western countries. Trying to get job before before you have a permanent residency visa however, is nigh on impossible unless you have a skill that is in high demand (and companies are finding it difficult to recruit locally), or you already have contacts who can arrange a job for you. For most jobs, companies and employment agents will not consider you without a permanent residency visa.
Skills that remain in high demand are those such as nursing and panel beating. IT jobs are relatively over subscribed, as many large IT businesses cut back their Australian operations after the Y2K boom.
